Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy

The Community Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy Service assesses and treats a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. Following thorough assessment, we treat using a variety of methods including movement and exercise (which can include exercise classes), manual techniques, education and advice. These techniques that are based on up-to-date research help aid the recovery of patients with the ultimate aim of returning full function back to patients or to enable them to live with long-term chronic conditions, following a patient-centred approach.

We carry out the assessment and treatment of musculoskeletal problems which affect bones, joints and soft tissues. These generally affect the:

  • Spine – from the neck through to lower back
  • Hips, knees, feet and ankles
  • Shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands.

The Clinical Orthopaedic Assessment Service (OCAS) provides specialist assessment, investigations if required and management or onward referral of musculoskeletal conditions which are serious or have not resolved following GP and Physiotherapy management. The Extended Scope Practitioners (ESP’s) who work in this service have received extensive training in areas such as blood, and radiological investigations and treatments such as joint injections. We are unable to accept a self-referral for this service and must be referred either by GP or by your physiotherapist.

Our staff can refer patients to other departments for specialist advice, an opinion for surgery or other specialist treatments such as spinal injections.

We accept Self-referrals, GP referrals and those from other health care professionals.

When you have been referred by your GP or by self-referral, you will be put on our waiting list. Once appointments become available, you will be sent an opt-in letter asking you to call our admin team to book with one of our physiotherapists within the Walsall area. Once confirmed a letter will be sent with confirmation of the location, date and time of your appointment.

If you require any help or special requirements for the appointment, please let the administrative team know on booking of your appointment so we can do all that we can to accommodate you. If you require a clinician of the same gender please let us know.

You can call our admin team on 0121 568 4311, phone lines are open from 9.30am – 4pm Monday to Friday. At busy periods you may want to call out of hours and leave an answerphone message and one of the admin team will get back to you.

We also have an interpretation service available should they be required.

We accept self referral for patients aged 18 years and older, with a Walsall GP. We also advise that if a GP refers we advise that they refer to us to allow us all the information required.

Any referral for post-operative care or under a consultant will similarly need a referral from them for us to accept in case of any complexities we need to be aware of as part of the referral.
