Transitional Care Unit

Our Transitional Care Unit is a special unit for babies who need a little extra care. It is suitable for newborns who don’t have health issues that need neonatal care.

They may have been born a couple of weeks early, may have had a low birth weight or may have a condition that affects their ability to maintain their temperature and feed adequately.

Transitional care may also be suitable for babies whose mums have diabetes or whose mums are on specific medication that can affect their health once they have been born.

It means mums can stay with their babies while they receive additional support to help them care for their new arrivals. Babies receiving transitional care may only need to be in hospital for a 48 hour period or may need a longer stay of up to ten days if they have an infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics for example.

Our specialist neonatal team will see your baby daily to review their needs and make a plan for that day. This may include being transferred to another ward or discharged home if they are well enough.

It is so important for new mums to be given as much opportunity as possible to bond with their babies and even more so if those babies have additional care needs. Keeping mum and baby together is extremely important and the Transitional Care Unit is a positive addition to our maternity services.

Visiting

See our ward visiting times page for the latest information. One birth partner, your own children and a maximum of two additional visitors can visit. A free car parking pass is available for you while your baby is being cared for on this unit. Please ask a member of staff for a form that needs to be completed and taken to General Office on Route 136.
