This Friday promises to be merry and bright for visitors and staff at Walsall Manor Hospital as its Christmas tree lights are officially switched on.
The annual event, organised by Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust’s Well Wishers charity, will see inspirational amputee Tommy Brown, 13, do the honours, joined by the borough’s Mayor and Mayoress.
Tommy, who attends Streetly Academy, lost both his legs from the knee down and his right arm just below the elbow, all due to meningitis as a baby. He enjoys training sessions with former British lightweight boxing champion Martin Gethin, local hero and Well Wishers patron.
His dad Dean Brown, who will be attending the big switch-on with his partner and Tommy’s mum Julie, said: “He’s a bit nervous but he’s looking forward to it.
“He’s never done anything like this before but he will take it in his stride, just like he does with everything. He’s got permission to leave school early and it’s something he wants to do. He’s looking forward to seeing everyone.
“When he goes boxing it’s the highlight of his week but I think this will match it!”
Tommy’s brother and three sisters are also hoping to attend the event.
The lights switch-on is part of the Trust’s Festive Fridays which run on 6, 13 and 20 December. This Friday’s event will feature a host of seasonal stalls, and musical entertainment with the official switch-on starting from 3pm as Great Barr Brass Band spreads some yuletide cheer. Tommy will press the all-important button at 3.30pm and mince pies will be available for the crowd.
Georgie Westley, Fundraising Manager, said: “We can’t wait for our first Festive Friday and are all geared up to make it one to remember.
“Christmas is such a special time and we pull out all the stops to make sure our patients, visitors and staff can be a part of the celebrations. We look forward to giving everyone a warm welcome.”
