Poorly children from Walsall and Wolverhampton enjoyed a magical trip on board the Santa Express thanks to the generosity of a volunteer-run railway.
The trip, organised by Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust’s Well Wishers Charity, and The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust (RWT) Charity whisked youngsters on a festive train trip around Chasewater Country Park in Burntwood.
One of the VIPs on the train was one-year-old Poppy Holden from Walsall. Poppy has Down’s syndrome and is cared for by Walsall Healthcare.
Poppy’s mum Kelly Holden was on the train with her husband Tom and daughters Holly, 10 and seven-year-old Lexi.
Kelly said: “We were all so excited to come today and have a train ride around Chasewater.
“It feels so lovely and festive and the girls were really excited. It is nice to do something as a family and for the girls to meet Santa.”
Andy Mould, Director of Chasewater Railway, said: “We wanted to put on these special NHS Santa Express Trains today free of charge to give something back to the community.
“It is important to us to support the local communities and it was a privilege to welcome the families abroad the Santa Express and see all the children’s smiling faces.
“We hope that everyone had a magical experience which will stay with them for years to come.”
Georgie Westley, Fundraising and Engagement Manager at Well Wishers, said: “The run up to Christmas is always a busy and exciting time for Walsall Healthcare’s Well Wishers and the charity is always amazed at the generosity of communities.
“A huge thank you to Chasewater Railway for making today such a special one for our young patients who have had to face some incredibly difficult health challenges in their lives.
“Their smiles say it all – they are having a wonderful time today and have made special memories with their families.
“And remember, you can make a difference all year round by supporting Well Wishers and we’d love to hear from anyone who would like to work with us to make a difference.”
