Judges have voted Walsall Manor Hospital’s Urgent and Emergency Care Centre a national winner – presenting Tilbury Douglas with a construction award in recognition of the successful project.

Tilbury Douglas built the centre, which opened to its first patients in March last year, working in partnership with Walsall Healthcare Project Managers, clinical staff, Estates, Infection Prevention and Control, IT, Support Services and health and wellbeing colleagues.

The building won the Project of the Year (£20m to £50m) category and judges were impressed at the Clinical Transformation plan led by Liz Slevin, ED and Acute Care Transformational Lead Nurse, and Debbie White, former interim Deputy Divisional Director, during the construction phases.

One, Paul Mustow, Director of Delivery Performance and Assurance on the multi-billion New Hospitals Programme, stated: “This project stood out as a construction project that has been a catalyst for a transformation to a new clinical model.”

Ned Hobbs, Deputy Chief Executive and Chief Operating Officer at Walsall Healthcare, said: “Well done to Tilbury Douglas on beating strong competition to clinch this award.

“It symbolises an extremely effective partnership between construction, our local communities and our staff and has brought about significant improvements for our patients as well as a much-improved workplace.”

Tilbury Douglas delivered the project just over two years after the first enabling works got underway in January 2021.

Simon Butler, Managing Director Building Central at Tilbury Douglas, said: “To win such a prestigious award further highlights the first-class project delivered collaboratively by all key stakeholders involved with this scheme.

“The new, high-quality, modern development will assist Walsall Healthcare in improving the patient experience and allowing for greater flexibility for the future.”

The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.

It includes an Urgent Treatment Centre, Emergency Department (ED), including Resus and Rapid Assessment and Treatment area, and Children’s ED, co-located Paediatric Assessment Unit, Acute Medical Unit and provision for Frailty and Community Integrated Assessment Services.

It also includes re-configuration of the current ED footprint, to incorporate improved Same Day Emergency Care and Imaging services.

Various specialist facilities are located throughout, such as an isolation room for infectious patients, bariatric provision and digital X-ray rooms.

All areas have been designed specifically to enhance clinical staff efficiency, improve quality of care, improve patient experience, and improve the working environment for staff.
