A caring family has made a generous donation of toys for young patients at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust to thank staff for looking after their son.
George Bowker, aged three, suffered a seizure after opening his birthday presents.
Having had more seizures, parents Andy and Claire Bowker took him to Manor Hospital where he was diagnosed with epilepsy. George was cared for on Paediatric Assessment Unit and the Children’s Ward before being discharged.
George’s condition is now being controlled by medication and he hasn’t had a full seizure for more than a month.
The couple, from Bloxwich who also have sons Alfie 12, and Oliver, nine, wanted to do something to thank staff for the care given to George.
They persuaded friends, family and colleagues from their employers – Andy works for Lidl, where he runs the shop fitting warehouse, and Claire is a Contraception and Sexual Health Nurse for Walsall Healthcare – to give generously. They bought toys and donated DVDs worth hundreds of pounds.
“We thought he was choking on a satsuma after opening his presents but it turned out to be a seizure,” said Claire, who trained at Walsall Healthcare in 2007. “His eyes went back and he turned purple.
“Thankfully he hasn’t had a full seizure for four weeks now and we wanted to say thank you to those who looked after him, and do something for the children in hospital. We want to support the two wards that cared for George.”
Walsall Healthcare’s charity Well Wishers collected the donation and passed it on to the two wards, where the items were eagerly received.
Kimberley Aplin, Well Wishers Fundraising Support Officer, said: “We’re really pleased that George is now recovered and his condition is under control. We’re really thankful for the toys and DVDs, which will be a real treat for the younger patients on the wards.”
